Most of the wildlife in the North Central Plains live in grassland ecosystems, which include over 32 species of bats, armadillos (left), coyotes, badgers, deer, prairie dogs (center) and gophers, jackrabbits, and javelins. Bison thrived in the grasslands but were quickly killed off by American hunters in the 18th century, leaving them in small, confined areas.
